MUBI Launches Publishing Arm with Debut Book Read Frame Type Film, A Bold Exploration of Typography in Experimental Cinema

Published in collaboration with the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Read Frame Type Film delves into the underexplored relationship between typography and film. From credit sequences to subtitles and title cards, the book examines how text shapes cinematic experience—especially within experimental and artists’ films that have historically existed on the fringes of mainstream film discourse.

Curated by Enrico Camporesi and enriched with essays by design historian Catherine de Smet and designer Philippe Millot, the book highlights 24 pioneering works from the Centre Pompidou’s collection. These include films by avant-garde and modernist visionaries such as Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, Dziga Vertov, Yvonne Rainer, and Michael Snow. The selected number—24—pays homage to the standard frame rate of analog cinema: 24 frames per second.

With specially commissioned photography of analogue film strips and reflective texts, the book itself becomes a tactile and experimental object. Readers are invited to explore how language on screen transforms from narrative aid to artistic medium, incorporating everything from concrete poetry to instructional signage and optical effects.

Developed from the Centre Pompidou’s TypoFilm research project launched in 2020, Read Frame Type Film is a visual and conceptual tribute to the intersection of film, typography, and design.

The book is distributed globally through Thames & Hudson and D.A.P. / Distributed Art Publishers and is available for pre-order now at mubieditions.com.

Featured Films Include:

  • Anémic Cinéma (Marcel Duchamp, 1926)
  • A Sixth Part of the World (Dziga Vertov, 1926)
  • L’Étoile de mer (Man Ray, 1928)
  • The Flicker (Tony Conrad, 1966)
  • So Is This (Michael Snow, 1982)
  • and 19 more groundbreaking titles.
